View of the soldier during ww

Do you agree with the view that the British soldier's life in the trenches of the Western Front during the First World War was one of unbroken horror? Trench conditions varied widely between different theatres of war, different sectors within a theatre, and with the time of year and weather. Trench life was however always one of considerable squalor, with so many men living In a very constrained space. Source 7 supports this by saying â€Å"troops fell prey to dysentery and trench fever as a result of filthy conditions and exposure†.However source 8 disagrees where it depicts how the roofs where only in the trenches for a â€Å"short time†, furthermore source 9 continues to support source 8 by saying â€Å"casualties where low†. The trenches clearly were not a nice place to be and their would much nicer places the troops would of rather been. However Source 9 tells â€Å"casualties were low simply because men were in trenches. † This gives the impression t hat life in trenches was not so bad after all. It explains how the trenches saved the lives of the troops and clearly were an asset to the soldiers. However from my own knowledge I see the trenches to have; scraps of scarred food, empty tins and other waste, the nearby presence of the latrine, the general dirt of living half underground and being unable to wash or change for days or weeks at a time created conditions of severe health risk (and that Is not counting the military risks). Vermin Including rats and lice were very numerous; disease was spread both by them, and by the maggots and flies that thrived on the nearby remains of decomposing human and animal corpses. This is supported in source 7 where it illustrates the troops â€Å"suffered from typhoid caused by lice and were liable o get fungal infection known as trench foot in the frequently wet, muddy conditions. † This supports the view that the British soldier's life in the trenches of the Western Front during the Fi rst World War was one of unbroken horror. Troops in the trenches were also subjected to the weather: the winter of 1916-1917 in France and Flanders was the coldest in living memory; the trenches flooded In the wet, sometimes to waist height, whenever It rained.Men suffered from exposure, frostbite, trench foot (a wasting disease of the flesh caused by the foot being wet and cold, constrained Into tots and puttees, for days on end, that would cripple a man), and many diseases brought on or made worse by living in such a way. This is supported in source 7 where it states the men were in â€Å"wet, muddy conditions†. This surprisingly backed up by Source 9 (Argues the trenches were safe, â€Å"constructed for protection†) where it says â€Å"the mud that exists in our mental depictions of the Front was most common in Flanders†. However Source 9 contradicts its self by saying â€Å"the land tended to drain properly'.This gives a complete different perspective, but goes on to explain why. The reason is due to the† trenches passing through many kinds of terrain†. This explains the a cause for completely different accounts about the lives for the soldiers in the trenches and shows how the vast length of the trench line meant different areas had completely different weather and terrains. Indeed, the Great War, a phrase coined even before It had begun, was expected to be a relatively short affair and, as with most wars, one of great movement. The First exemplified on the Western Front from autumn 1914 until spring 1918.Source 8 helps to portray this as well where it says â€Å"the idea that was not stopping in the trenches for long†. The word â€Å"idea† in this quote implies the fact that this is what the generals wanted to happen but may have not actually happened. Source 8 goes on to say, â€Å"the result, in the long term, meant that we lived a mean and impoverished sort of existence in lousy scratch holes. † T his shows, due to expectation of continues moving towards the Germans, the trenches were not well made or fortified and therefore not giving the men enough protection or comfortable living spaces. This however, is contradicted by Source 9 where it says how â€Å"casualties were low simply because men were in trenches. † And where it also quotes the trenches â€Å"were instructed for protection†. Not that there wasn't movement at all on the Western Front during 1914-18; the war began dramatically with sweeping advances by the Germans through Belgium and France heading for Paris. However stalemate and trench warfare soon set in, and the expected war of movement wasn't restored until towards the close of the war, although the line rippled as successes were achieved at a small level. Finally, no overview of trench life can avoid the aspect that instantly struck visitors to the lines: the appalling reek given off by numerous conflicting sources. Rotting carcasses lay around i n their thousands. For example, approximately 200,000 men were killed on the Some battlefields, many of which lay in shallow graves. Overflowing latrines would similarly give off a most offensive stench. Men who had not been afforded the luxury of a bath in weeks or months would offer the pervading dour of dried sweat. The feet were generally accepted to give off the worst dour. Trenches would also smell of cresol or chloride of lime, used to stave off the constant threat of disease and infection. To add to this the smell of cordite, the lingering dour of poison gas, rotting sandbags, stagnant mud, cigarette smoke ND cooking food. This is supported by Source 7, describing how the soldiers â€Å"had to share their dugouts and their food with disease ridden rats fattened on a plentiful supply of rotting corpses†.This portrays that the life in trenches was one of unbroken horror. It can be said that the trenches were clearly better than nothing, offering small amounts of protecti on at the least. However they clearly were not something they looked forward to with its â€Å"filthy conditions† stated in source 7. I feel the main difference between the sources which create the argument, is likely to be that the counts are taken from different locations along the British front line as well the time of the year.As stated previously, the winter of 1916-1917 in France and Flanders was the coldest in living memory, where as other times of the year and different areas were not so bad. Moreover the trenches were a place of hell. AH though they offered protection for the troops, the conditions and living standards were terrible. Therefore, agreeing that the British soldier's life in the trenches of the Western Front during the First World War was one of unbroken horror. Charlie Runoff

“El Sacramento Prohibido” Reaction Paper Essay

Doctrines, traditions, conventions, politics, taboos, these are some elements that are part of the everyday lives of people in the Philippine society. Usually when these are the topics or subjects, issues are commonly entailed. These are the central themes of Lester Andrada’s thesis production which he previewed last March 28, 2014 at the NCAS Alumni Plaza, or the garden area that looks like a small courtyard inside the NCAS building. â€Å"El Sacramento Prohibido† or â€Å"the Forbidden Sacrament† is a satirical production which utilized Absurdism and perhaps a slight hint of the stylings of the Theatre of Cruelty. The story of El Sacramento Prohibido (ESP) revolves around Dante, a young priest fresh out of the seminary who was assigned to the church at his hometown to be its new â€Å"kura† or reverend. Though he brandishes the aura of a straightforward virtuous young man, he bears a secret. Fr. Dante is homosexual, a fact that is controversial and technically against Christian doctrine. Dante was sent to a seminary in Manila by his parents who were both power hungry politicians who saw Dante only as a casualty that may tarnish their names. But even before leaving for the seminary, Dante has a lover, Abel, who was, during Dante’s absence, executed by Fr. Loreto, an old priest residing in San Idelfonso. Upon returning, Dante was attended to by a young altar server named Lermo. He was a thoughtful boy, who was the first to discover Dante’s secret during one of Dante’s moments of reminiscence when he accidentally kissed the boy while thinking of Abel whose whereabouts he has yet to find out. Eventually he shall know everything that happened in his hometown, all the misdeeds done by the church, by his own parents, and ultimately, the murder of his lover. Upon finding out the truth, Dante was   consumed by the darkness, and in the end he kills everyone including himself. In the afterlife, Dante is seen with Abel, together peacefully and happily in paradise. ESP has creatively utilized the production elements in the somewhat intimate setting. First off would be the set and props. ESP was the first production that I have seen using the garden area in NCAS, and it  was a very unique experience, though a setback of it may be that the audience capacity is very limited, and the audience area itself is not leveled since the back part of the audience area is lower than the front, meaning those at the back would have a hard time seeing anything. My favorite thing about the set is how they were able to maximize the structure of the NCAS building itself. The scenes where the undead were pounding on the windows of the NCAS staircase, it was very memorable and awesome. On the props, they were creative but not as accurate (visually) as the actual church paraphernalia like the chalice, and the placement of the podium. The costumes and makeup of the actors were nice, the prosthetics were impressive but can still maybe stepped up a notch. The music wa s creepy, and therefore appropriate. I found it remarkable the moments of live choral music performed by the other actors (the parts when Herzl was at the back of the audience and she was chanting), very beautiful. The lights could be improved especially the timing of when to turn the lights on or off, but the lights in general had been able to establish the mood of the scenes alongside the music. The film component was impressively done in terms of cinematography. The technical aspects of the production can still be improved, like with the projector, and the synchronization of the lights and sounds with the scene. The thing that makes me think of many things about ESP is the text itself. I grew up in a very religious environment. I know how many things worked, why some things are done, what some things meant, since these things were taught to me since I was a child. I found it hard not to comment on some of the technical aspects of the production, like the props (as I mentioned earlier) and also the text, on what the actors were saying. I really cannot blame the playwright since I heard that he was not a Catholic. I think what the playwright intended to depict is the undesirable characteristics and actions of the Church and how other people see it, and with that kind of perspective I think it had  done that part well. Though looking at it in retrospect, I think that perhaps had it been too accurate, it may be more offensive especially if they don’t know how to look at things with an artistic perspective, or just with an open mind. The text had tackled many issues in the Philippine  society. There’s the case of the LGBT, where they are seen as undesirable in society as portrayed by how Fr. Loreto and Mr. & Mrs. Barrameda had shunned Dante because of his homosexuality. Another issue is with the church, or I should rather say the church practitioners, which had done wrongs since the time of the Spanish colonization when they used the word of God to exploit and take advantage of the people, as depicted by how Fr. Loreto always demands payments for sermons and other things that shouldn’t even be given a price. This next one may not be that much of an issue but the harm that can be brought about by gossip, which was depicted by the three ladies who attend mass and then afterwards talk bad about other people. The last one I shall point at is the dirty politics which is rampant in the Philippines. It was depicted by Dante’s parents who buy votes in a desperate attempt to hold on to power. They even wanted to utilize Dante’s influence as a priest in order to make the people vote for them. The part which disappointed me was the fact that Dante had given in to the darkness, and also the fact that he killed Lermo, the innocent young boy who was always there to support him. But anyways, as a production, I think El Sacramento Prohibido is good and overall an enjoyable experience especially during the times when they break the fourth wall (well, at least for me, I’m okay with it), and also it wants to tell the audience not just a story but also a message of awareness about what is happening in society nowadays.

The History of the Non-Commissioned Officer

OverviewThe origin of the non commissioned officer (NCO) developed early in the country’s history, actually before the country was a country.   In the late 1700s the mean worried about their rights of liberty and property at the hands of the English monarchy.  Ã‚   â€Å"These advocates of ‘the citizen-soldier’ called on free,   adult men of property to respond to their sense of duty, to their sense of political obligation, by serving for a period of time in the militia of their community. Thus military service, indeed, compulsory service in militias, was deemed appropriate under what has come to be known as the â€Å"consent† theory of government† (Karsten, 2001).Fisher points to a difficulty in distinguishing between commissioned officers and non commissioned officers.   He claims that it wasn’t until the early 1700s that a distinction could be made. He argues that by the Revolutionary War period, great confidence was place on the po sition of the non-commissioned officer, including the promise of some financial rewards (as high as $80) to those who made it through each designated segment of service.   However, there was still an undertone of lower status of the NCO at this particular time in American history (Fisher, 2001).Unfortunately, not everyone felt the need to serve his country in the face of all enemies.   Many founding essayists felt as if abandoning work to join in the military was an irresponsible action for husbands and sons alike.  Ã‚   Even though the American Army had the money to pay 75,000 men in 1776, it never got more than 37,500 to sign up at any one time (Karsten, 2001). Thus, the picture of the non-commissioned officer was less of a concerned and responsible citizen solder and more of a lazy, unfocused, displaced laborer.Between 1820 and 1850 the organization and training of these men was loose and unorganized.   The enrolled men met only once or twice a year for â€Å"militia mus ter and drill† as the law dictated.   â€Å"If one had ‘the common defense of the nation’ in mind when he came to view such musters, it was quickly dispelled as the day turned from muster to picnic to drunken brawl in rather too rapid succession† (Karsten, 2001).In addition to these men, the army also had a fair number of women.   Like most armies, the Continental Army included women and even their children who â€Å"followed the troops throughout the war, performing tasks that contributed to the soldiers’ welfare† (Rees, 1995).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1777, Valley Forge had 400 women enlisted in its army.   The number continued to rise and some units from areas closer to the coast had far more than average numbers of women (Rees, 1995).Training and DisciplineBlack describes training as â€Å"learning war through war†   Ã‚  (Black, 2002).   Training was generally poor or non-existent because it was very difficult to amass large numbers of people in one spot, and if they were amassed, they were nearly impossible to outfit with supplies and weapons due to the tack of transportation and supporting infrastructure. The lack of training reduced the confidence of the men to fight in certain situations, especially in the open, so they often broke ranks and ran (Black, 2002)Others disagree; Sheps and Pitcavage (1995) argue that the organization was as good as it could have possible been at that time in American history.   These state organizations had extensive codes which regulated personnel selection, training, etc.   These state organizations were hierarchical and geographical, sometimes electing officers and other times appointing them.   Further subdivisions included brigades, regiments and companies. In some states officers were elected; in others, they were appointed by the state. The entire state was usually organized into geographical divisions which then corresponded with a military division (Sheps and Pitcavage, 1995).In 1792, Anthony Wayne was one of the first great training generals for combat.   Training and discipline gradually improved through the early 1800s.   Large regiments increased confidence and better training led to more disciplined ranks. However, this training fell off in the years preceding the Civil War,   and the problems recurred for both the North and the South during the war (Black, 2002).Drills and operations slowly revived.   At the beginning of the Civil War two manuals describing the duties of the NCO had been published.   They were called Infantry Tactics by General Winfield Scott and Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics by Colonel William J. Hardee.   According to these manuals, the NCO was to keep military cadence and direction, act as general guides and to instruct new recruits.   In addition, they were to learn to give commands (Fisher, 2001)Even extremely specific instructions began to be printed.   IN addition to his two part expl ications on the care and cleaning of the musket, Alan Bowling wrote the following in his report on military drills around the time of the Civil War:â€Å"This is not meant as a criticism of anyone but as a way of standardizing our drill practices and helping the 5th look sharp at drill as from accounts I have read the original members of the Missouri Brigade were known for their sharp drill. At our recent Spring Drill I noticed there was some confusion on conducting the inspection of arms, particularly the proper way for a soldier to give and take his musket to and from the inspecting officer or NCO.† (2006).  Indeed other duties of the NCO were to make sure that all supplies, including helmets and weapons, were kept clean (Fisher, 2001).WeaponsEarly skirmishes saw the use of virtually anything as a weapon.   One example is the use of the pitchfork during Shay’s Rebellion in 1787. However, as more organized fighting progressed, aim and use of cover were more import ant than the weapons used.   The musket had only one real advantage over the bow and arrow, that being that the bow and arrow was more likely to be deflected by vegetation.   The musket was hard to repair due to a lack of equipment,   skill and experience,   and nearly all of the ammunition had to be brought from Europe (Black, 2002).The introduction of the mass produced percussion cap of the early 1800s made the rifle a little more dependable because of the reduction of misfires.   James H. Burton made an important improvement to the bullets used by theses NCOs by giving it a hollow base.   This bullet was less expensive, could be locally produced and was far more accurate than earlier bullets (Black, 2002).Developments in guns included the Union Repeating Rifle which eliminated the need to reload as often as they had to with the musket and early rifles.   The Gatling gun was one of the first machine guns, but it wasn’t utilized much prior to the Civil War beca use it ate up too much ammunition and was difficult to transport across the terrain (Black, 2002).FormationsThe early NCOs were to maintain formations that seemed more like Napoleonic warfare.   The leaders were more interested in establishing positions and destruction of the opposing army no matter where they were located.  Ã‚  Ã‚   They would often hesitate to use the bayonets and choose instead to fall back and fire from their muskets, which, as previously noted, were not at all accurate and forced the men to shoot, stop and reload over and over again. Even after the Repeating Rifle (AKA the Ager gun) appeared, the generals were reluctant to change their conservative ways and use them (Black, 2002).ConclusionThe NCO is considered the backbone of the US ARMY with two responsibilities: accomplishment of the mission and the welfare of the soldiers (NCO CREED). From its history in voluntary service in the revolutionary war to its intermediary services now, the NCO has always had a vital role in American historyReferencesBowling, Allen. (2006). HP SWOT Strengths of HP 1. Global presence. 2. Strong brand image with high quality of product and service. 3. Providing customers service with specific technical support. 4. Successful Strategic Acquisitions. Hewlett-Packard has strong financial condition. Hewlett-Packard is a global company and became world’s biggest computer hardware. The growth of 26% in the Americas; 28% world-wide percent in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; and 16 percent in Asia Pacific and Japan with the broad-based global recovery (HP Annual Report, 2010).Hewlett-Packard is maintaining the No. 1 position in worldwide market share, as well as healthy average selling prices. Hewlett-Packard is differentiating through remarkable product design and customer experience from the range of high-end gaming PCs to sleek, powerful notebooks to fashion-inspired netbooks and innovative smartphones (HP Annual Report, 2010). Hewlett-Packard has its own support organizations to provide customers service with spec ific technical support.Hewlett-Packard can provide end-to-end IT solution, including infrastructure technology, business process outsourcing, technology support and maintenance, application development and support services and consulting and integration service. Hewlett-Packard continues on recognizing and capitalizing on strategic acquisitions. The company’s major mergers and acquisitions in recent past include Compaq Computer Corporation in 2002. In April of 2010, Hewlett-Packard announced to buy Palm for 1. 2 Billion. It increases its competitiveness therefore creates value for investors and customers of the company.Weaknesses of HP 1. Weak Market Segment Integration 2. Over rely on three-party supplier 3. R&D department has significantly less investments 4. Not comprehensive product portfolio HP lack presence in some segments. Comparing to its major competitors, such as Accenture, EMC and IBM, HP’s portfolio offers less significant on software product or manage con sulting services. Also, according to HP 2010 annual report, it has a great preformance on enterprise customer market but weak at small-scale market. HP over rely on three party supplier.HP's procurement expenditures for materials, manufacturing and assembly of HP's products all over the world. The suppliers includes contract manufacturers, electronic manufacturing services providers, original design manufacturers, and commodity suppliers. It is would be compliated and difficult to remain the relationships with the suppliers. HP invest less on R&D, compare to historical spending. HP does not develop the new technology for new product. Althoug HP has its brand smart phone, however, this properly attributes to the acquiring Compaq. For the smart phone technology, HP is leaved behind its competitors. Thus, they trend to acquire Palm. HP’s competitiveness mainly focus on 14. 1 inch notebook, however, the 15. 4 inch notebook is the current second largest market need. HP product line lack of attention on 15. 4 inch notebook. And also HP hardly focus to 13. 3 inch product. However, those size of notebook is the market need. It seems HP has not comprehensive product portfolio. Threats of HP †¢ Hyper-competition in IT market †¢ High bargaining power of Smartphone market †¢ Slowdown in economic conditions in US †¢ Foreign currency exchange rate Although Hewlett-Packard is maintaining the No. position in worldwide market share, some of the companies as a formidable competitor threatened in IT market such as Toshiba, Lenova Group and Aver. They compete in terms of price, quality, brand, technology, reputation, distribution and also range of other products. Hewlett-Packard wants to redevelop their Smartphone market, but they lack of this experience and technology. Hence, compare with Apple, Google, it still has a lot of space to improve and catch up. So this is the high bargaining power in Smartphone market when they want to expand this market. The economic slowdown has negatively affected many market segments, including information technology. Hewlett Packard has experienced this decline not only in the U. S. but also in its global markets. Worldwide spending on IT was predicted to decline by 4% in 2009. Foreign currency exchange rate is one of the external factors that we cannot expect. It is the big threat when foreign currency exchanges rate changes, it might influence the cost of production or the selling price in different countries. Opportunities of HP †¢ High growth rate of Smartphone market †¢ Change of lifestyle Change of consumer spending †¢ Innovation of 3C(Computer, Communication, Consumer Electronic) products The Smartphone market is having the high growth rate of nowadays. According to the researcher ISuppli Corp. , the global Smartphone shipments may increase 36 percent to 247 million in 2010. The high growth rate can reflect the demand of Smartphone is also high for customers. The lifestyle of p eople is change that they will more enjoy the online social with others. The online social is one part of daily life of many citizens. Management (a manager alumni affair in a non-profit organization iEARN Essay

Management (a manager alumni affair in a non-profit organization iEARN Australia) - Essay Example John has to coordinate with people in order to make an event success. As a leader of the program he has to take initiatives and then lead the program as people look towards him for any further instructions. As a representative for alumni members in an organization he can't practice autocratic, paternalistic style where as laissez fair or democratic styles are widely adopted by the alumni coordinators and managers. Mr. John beliefs that he is more tilted towards democratic approach. Unlike other managers and directors in profit making organizations, Mr. John doesn't face any competitions as there are non, but the difficult part is to keep the alumni members motivated and intact with out having them on pay role or any such thing and at the same time involving them in alumni programs. There are many responsibilities of a manager of alumni affairs as he also has to motivate alumni members through programs that are beneficial for alumni as well, such programs include, career counseling, social gatherings or trips etc. As a manager alumni fair he posses excellent interpersonal skills as he has to coordinate with alumni members and the other organizations and is also responsible for sharing information with alumni members. ... As a manager one should posses all four basic managerial skills, technical, conceptual, motivation to engage and human skills. But for Mr. John it is essential to have very good human skills and then motivation to engage and then conceptual skills. Technical skills are not required by his post. As the work is mostly dealing with members and organizations, he has to show excellent human skills. Mr. John beliefs that if he fails to pose these skills, then this might lead to miss management in the alumni and also will raise conflicts between members as all members are not alike. As the work in the organization is project based but the product base and is a non profit organization, external environment plays little destructive role, but still projects are some time effected by the disorder in stability of external environment, such stability factors can me many but the most important is the political and economical. There are also many complexities in the environment as well and as a Alumni manager Mr. Jon's job is to work with in these complexities of the environment. A part from the external environment Mr.John has to monitor the general environment as the economic conditions such as recessions might lower the alumni budget and thus less programs. Political conditions are some time not feasible for initiating any project thus he has to consider that as well, other wise that might cause legal problems as well. In an alumni program technological environment does not have much impact, but socio cultural environment does have a big impact. If alumni fail to confirm with the norms of culture then organization might come under criticisms and thus will cause damage to the image of the organization. So as alumni manager he has to monitor all sort

Motivational methods - Essay Example Managers take care of factors that influence the performance of workers working at the grass-root level. Such factors include but are not limited to salary, accommodation, duty hours, leave, reward and promotion etc. This paper aims at discussing three ways in which workers’ motivation can be increased. The three motivation increasing methods can be derived from Alderfer’s ERG theory which is briefly discussed below: Alderfer’s ERG theory: Alderfer devised the ERG theory of motivation where E, R and G stand for existences, relatedness and growth needs respectively. Alderfer’s ERG theory states that managers need to take care of all of these needs at the same time, and should not focus upon addressing 1 or 2 of these to increase the workers’ motivation at a particular time, because this may not necessarily motivate the workers. The existence needs identified by Alderfer include safety and basic physiological needs, relatedness needs correspond to the workers’ needs of sociology and external esteem while the growth needs address the workers’ concerns about their self actualization and internal esteem (NetMBA, 2010). Although Alderfer has proposed a hierarchical order for these three needs, yet he maintains that an individual looks for the satisfaction of each of the three needs simultaneously, and may not wait one need to be accomplished to strive for the fulfillment of the other two. Alderfer’s ERG theory model (Business Education, 2010). Alderfer grants that an individual prefers to fulfill his/her existence needs over relatedness needs, and relatedness needs over growth needs, though Alderfer maintains that the order of needs may vary from individual to individual and thus, may not always remain the same. Alderfer’s ERG theory works on the frustration-regression principle which means that if a higher level need of an individual is not met, the individual may regress to a lower level need that is re latively simpler to be met. Alderfer’s ERG theory implies that managers should realize that workers are struggling to fulfill each of the three needs simultaneously. Therefore, managers should take steps to meet each of the three needs of workers at the same time. In view of the Alderfer’s ERG theory, following three methods of motivation enhancement can be proposed: Managers can motivate workers by meeting their existence needs: Existence needs of workers can be met by increasing their safety conditions and providing them with medical and health facilities. This can be achieved by offering the workers’ compensation insurance, accommodation with work, providing the workers with personal protective equipment while they are on the site, and also addressing their food related concerns as food is a fundamental means of satisfying the physiological needs. Managers can motivate workers by meeting their relatedness needs: Workers’ relatedness needs can be addres sed by providing them with opportunities to socialize with their friends and families. Even within the work environment, workers’ relatedness needs can be met by helping them develop close bonds with their peers and coworkers. Interaction among coworkers is becoming increasingly difficult in the contemporary business practices that encourage multiculturalism in the workforce. Workers from different cultures are likely to develop conflicts on the base of culture, and avoid each

Women, crime, and criminology - Assignment Example Violations of gender roles were treated in the 19th century by various charitable missions and voluntary social work projects that focused on instilling moral conscience and virtues into wayward girls. Social control over girls primarily targeted status violations, since girls are not as frequently involved in violent crime. Status violations include such things as resisting home or school authority, becoming pregnant, running away (Gelsthorpe & Sharpe, 2006). An overwhelming number of girls reformatories and training schools were established in the early 20th century, 23 established between 1910-1920, and only five established in each decade of the half century prior to that (Schlossman & Wallach, 1985, p. 70). They basically tried to isolate the young women from all males. Into the 20th century, girls were thought to need kind guidance rather than punishment, unlike boys, but they have also been thought to be more difficult to handle. They have been seen as being more emotionally unstable, more vulnerable to bad influence, more psychiatrically challenged, and more stubborn, yet less criminally inclined. Their efforts to engage in freedom beyond the socio-culturally and religiously encouraged gender role expectations were routinely seen from a medical model of pathology and a religious model of temptation into sin. In the past century, status offences revolved around their sexuality (Gelsthorpe & Sharpe, 2006). Currently, the tendency is to criminalize their resistance, language, and even the way they dress and to spread great concern that young teen girls are increasingly turning to drugs, alcohol and violent crime, instead of only status offenses. Young women have relocated their social activities from home to the more publicly visible streets and clubs, a move that has set off moral alarms in society. Society has responded, most

Introduction to Business Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Introduction to Business Law - Essay Example The notices were so located that they were not visible at the time of entering the contract. In addition, the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 specifies that no contractual exclusion term can exclude or limit liability, if there had been negligence that had resulted in injury, death, or other loss or damage, where the term of the notice is unreasonable3. The validity of an exclusion clause is to be verified, by invoking the provisions of the Unfair Contracts Terms Act (UCTA) 19774 and the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations (UTCCR) 19995. In Curtis, the court held that the defendant company was unable to evade liability, on the basis of an exclusion clause; as it had been distorted by its sales personnel6. In Thornton v Shoe Lane Parking, the court ruled that the defendant was liable for the injury, because the contract had been concluded at the time of purchasing the ticket at the ticket dispensing machine7. An exclusion clause averts liability, only if it is a part of the contract. Moreover, in the absence of adequate notice, an exclusion clause is ineffective. This is axiomatic in contract law. In L’Estrange the exclusion clause being printed in a manner that was difficult to read, was held to be inapplicable by the court8. Therefore, the Uxbridge Hotel’s contention, relying on the exclusion clause, is not tenable. Therefore, the Uxbridge Mill House Hotel management cannot rely on exclusion clauses for evading liability, in respect of Angelina’s stolen jewellery. A proper notice had not been displayed and the notice had not been included in the contractual terms. The notices were so located that they were not visible at the time of entering the contract. In addition, the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 specifies that no contractual exclusion term can exclude or limit liability, if there had been negligence that had resulted in injury, death, or other loss

A+ - Essay Example Washington was an indefatigable actor who seemed to have lived the life of Boone himself, having the vitality of a Black man who was trying to fight for his rights and the rights of his fellowmen during the time of the busing system. Will Patton, on the other hand who played the role of Bill Yoast, the White American who coached along with Boone, was quite the opposite. His part seemed boring that if he were given longer parts in the movie, the story would have been a bore. Although he is a good actor himself, Patton’s soft voice and sometimes timid manners can make his parts monotonous. On a general note, the performance of the actor is worthy of an acclamation despite his serious role which probably influenced his mood in the movie. The Titans, the football team coached by the two aforementioned characters, portrayed different personalities, completing an exciting team of young people. Ryan Hurst who played the role of Gerry Bertier, the team’s captain played his role well, as he showed how the player bloomed from a self-centered, bigoted racist to a leader who valued his team’s attitude rather than race and status. His Black counterpart Wood Harris, who played the role of Julius Campbell, gave an equally highly rated performance. He had the same dynamic exuberance as Hurst that they shared together in bringing to life their respective roles. Both actors showed their emotions unrestrainedly, making their performances realistic and moving. The friendship that developed between the two characters was beautifully pictured through the emotions, conversations and naturally executed performances of the actors. Adding to the exciting and smooth flow of the story were the contributions of other actors who played the roles of other football players in the team. The different characterizations first of all, showed the many variations of characters, attitudes, beliefs and perspectives of people, which in real life; make living more beautiful,

It considers that people learn from one another, including such concepts as observational learning, imitation, and modeling. Among others Albert Bandura is considered the leading proponent of this theory.† (Ormrod, 1999). There are certain general principles that social learning theory follows, and these are: Cognitive factors in social learning include learning without performance, learning while processing cognitively, expectations about the consequences of certain actions, reciprocal causation, and modeling. Choose two (2) activities from the list of seven (7) reflective, analytical and experiential activities presented below. Each ac - Assignment Example I am a resident of United States and have gone to China for my job in a multinational company. There I have experienced a different culture altogether, which does not match with the culture of China. At first I was very much excited to embrace a new culture but slowly I understood that it is very stressful to get adapted and embrace a totally new culture. The first problem that was faced by me was the communication problem. But what really made me survive in the new country and saved me from my work and personal life complications, is the Zen meditation. I first came to know about the practice when one day a meditation class was arranged for the team members of the company. The meditation concept was decided by our employer, who understood our stressful condition and gave us the opportunity to improve our mind state and concentrate on our work. I was very much excited about the concept as I have never experienced such classes. The meditation class was held after the working hours. Af ter attending the class I liked the whole concept of the activity and was very much interested to know more about the activity (Thorby, 2011). Analysis Zen meditation is developed within the Japanese Zen Buddhism. The Zen practice is very effective to human body as it provides deep relaxation both physically as well as mentally. The meditation connects us with the subconscious part of our mind and assists us to link with our consciousness with the inner world of our mind. Thus, the practice helps us to connect with the inner garden of our mind in time and reduce stress to give us easiness. It takes us to that level where we can reduce our daily tension in our work and non-work life. When we are contended with our action, behavior and have reduced stress that we are going through, we improve our connection with the outside world. This increases the joy and vitality of our life and makes us more creative. This will increase the vitality and joy of our life and makes us concentrate on the creativity. The regular practice enhances and strengthens the self concentration, brings improvement in the balance of our body and helps to increase our mental strength. It assists in integrating those parts of our body, which has blocked vitality and perception that provides us with safer platform in life. The meditation practice mainly focuses on the central part of our body and mind. The practice is very easy and can be exercised easily be practiced without having any religious inclinations. The concept was first developed in Soto School and in this school Zen means sitting. The practice is also called ZaZen which gives us the meaning true sitting (Stevenson, 2012). It is totally a new culture to me and following the Soto tradition and meditating in the same way as they do is quite impossible if not practiced well. We all know that as an instrument of feeling and perception, our body is the main focus of our mind. If our body is relaxed we are bound to stay happy. Any type o f stress or tension disturbs our relaxed minds and thus it also harms our thought process and thus we become irritated very fast. Thus, it is very important to make our body relaxed, so that it does not affect our mind and thought process. Another critical activity of our body is breathing and apart from body it is

Should Life Imprisonment Without The Possibility Of Parole Replace The Research Paper - 1

Should Life Imprisonment Without The Possibility Of Parole Replace The Death Penalty - Research Paper Example Capital punishment is carried forward in several countries to this day through different methods like hanging, gas chambers, torturing, electrocuting and giving lethal injections. Many states of the world practicing this form of justice and have been challenged by human rights organizations for a long time. Proponents of the Death penalty believe that people fear death and if death is the punishment for killing someone, they would refrain from it. They believe that in order to have a just system in place where the victim’s family is put to ease it is important to have an eye for the eye approach. The criminal is guilty of taking someone’s life so he is liable to give up his. If the person is mentally unstable to have done so it makes him more dangerous to the society’s well-being and putting him to death is the only way to ensure such crimes do not take place through his hands again. However, opponents of the death penalty have a strong viewpoint as well. They be lieve that every life is precious and shouldn’t be given up on. If a criminal is guilty committing capital offense he should be subjected to punishments that take away his life figuratively, not literally. Also, many believe that taking away a criminal’s life is too easy on him, the real punishment would be him leading a hard life that prolongs his sufferings for the crime he committed. Executing a death penalty is costly for the governments as such cases are tried for a long time resulting injury expenditures and security arrangements for the courts.

Arguments for and Against Using Television Ratings to Measure Essay

Arguments for and Against Using Television Ratings to Measure Audiences - Essay Example Uses and gratifications approach stipulates that audience members tend to select the media that will satisfy their individual needs. In this case, people will use the media that meet their motives and eventual satisfaction of needs. Therefore, if a medium is more effective in terms of gratification, then people will use that medium more often. Media researchers were, therefore, concerned with understanding what people do with media with gratifications being understood as the effects that a certain medium had on the audience. A finding showed that there is a possibility that people will draw a similar response from the content of a thriller movie. Uses and gratification approach centers on the use of media based on the socio-psychological needs of an individual, as cited in Blumer and Katz (1974). They argue that the social and psychological aspects of an individual determine the kinds of expectations that these individuals have in the media. As such, individuals will seek the media that they find favorable in terms of their sociopsychological origins. Therefore, these sociopsychological characteristics will influence the individual’s media use as well as the expectations of gratifications that these individuals achieve from using the media. Richard Kilborn (2005) carried out a research on why people watch soap operas. The audience he assessed gave the feedback that they watched these soaps because soaps are an entertaining reward for the daily routine that comes with work. The audience also affirmed that soap operas act as the ultimate escapist fantasy that most people yearn for. Most people are said to watch a medium because in the content they can compare themselves with the experts. They also said that social interaction in the family and society were at large. People find certain media entertaining and educating at the same time. Gratification can be achieved only from the content being conveyed by a medium.

Most human behaviour and most of our decisions are rational. Discuss Essay

Most human behaviour and most of our decisions are rational. Discuss - Essay Example The latter is viewed as being a model that is extremely descriptive (Newell & Lagnado & Shanks, 2007. 33). Rational intently, is the word that describes people who engage in decision making. It must be known that at the same time, human beings are adaptive and goal oriented in all their actions. The factors, which often make them not make decisions that are rational, are emotional architecture and human cognitive. The latter is often experienced when human beings are in a situation whereby, they have to make decisions, which are extremely important. Many people make irrational decisions when under duress. It is important to avoid making irrational decisions during such times but to maintain calm until such a point that rational decisions is practical. Anger management is an important tool in decision making for it ensures rational rather than irrational decisions are made. Politics is an area where people have to constantly make decisions, which are rational. This is in accordance to a model that is utility classic expected. Evidence that supports this model is of a scientific nature. It has been proven through research, that decisions which are rational are not always possible. A person’s environment plays an essential role in determining whether people make decisions that are rational (Hastie & Dawes, 2001. 42). There is a misconception, which exists between the decision maker responsible for making choices and the environment where decision making occurs. A factor, which may take the form of incentives, can either be negative or positive and it affects decision making. The existence of techniques that are statistical as well as standardized, enable people to distinguish between factors, which are random, and those that are systematic. In turn, it is possible for rationality to be present in making decisions. According to Jonathan Baron (2008. 65), when people are

September 1913 Essay Example for Free

September 1913 Essay Unlike some of his earlier work, this poem adopts a new tone and style which expresses a hatred for the Catholic Bourgeoisie. [2] Yeats new use of unpleasant adjectives such as greasy is very much indicative of the tone, as he expresses that religion and the middle class is crafty and sly. Moreover, the use of the strong ABAB rhyme scheme maintains a spiteful and accusatory tone. The poem focuses on manifesting Yeats new stance of belief exploring his new political mind and celebrating those, whom he believes worth of praise. Notably, in all four of the refrains, Yeats mentions John OLeary, who was an Irish separatist of a different kind. His political stance was much less self-interested, compared with many of Yeats contemporaries, as he instead focused on getting the greatest good for Ireland. It is clear through the poem, Yeats admires this and wishes for a return to the less egotistical and self-driven politics of a bygone era. 3] Yeats does, however, appear to question whether these great historical figures, whom he admired and previously emulated in the style of his earlier work, are comprehensive in their understanding of the world in which they lived. Yeats wrote this poem following the Dublin Lock-Out and The Hugh Lane Bequest. Robert Emmet, mentioned in the poem, planned for a revolution several times, unsuccessfully. When he was finally successful, he was said to try and stop everything mid-rebellion, because he witnessed a man being pulled from his horse and killed. Considering that Emmet had spent months previously manufacturing explosives and weapons, this sudden drawback at the sight of violence, suggests that he did not fully understand the implications of a revolution. Perhaps Yeats is acknowledging the naivety of some Irish Republican figures like Robert Emmet, and himself, following public violence as a result of attempts at revolution.

Adam Bede Essay Example for Free

Adam Bede Essay George Eliot s novels are all dramas of moral conflict. She did not believe in art for arts sake, but in art for moralitys sake. According to Leslie Stephen, George Eliot believed that a work-of art not only may. but must, exercise also an ethical influence. She believed that, our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds. If we yield to temptation and sin, suffering and nemesis are sure to follow. We have to reap the consequences of our own actions. Her characters suffer because they violate some moral code, because they yield to temptation whether consciously or unconsciously, in Adam Bede both Hetty and Arthur suffer for this reason. Poignant tragedy is the result because both Arthur and Hetty are creatures of weak moral fibre. They are unable to resist temptation. This moral weakness results in sin, which is followed by punishment and intense suffering. Arthur-Hetty story traces the movement from weakness to sin and from sin to nemesis. Stratagems of Passion The stratagems of passion are seen with illuminating c1arrty when Arthur, after luncheon, is unable to recall the feelings and reflections which had been decisive in his decision to avoid Hetty. We are told of his conscious thoughts, and the self-deceptions and distortions of truth that we see in them make, so to speak, a chart of the subconscious force of his impulse to see her-as a strong underwater current, showing nosing on the surface, is yet known to be present by the extent to which its pull on the keel of a ship alters its course. It is in such accounts of motives, conscious and unconscious, that Arthur is created and exists as a character in the novel. Our recognition of his good intentions, self-deceptions and weaknesses of will make the portrayal real and acceptable to us. Maturity through Love We are not permitted to see the process by which Dinah is enabled to . overcome her fear, and it is a serious flaw in the novel that it is so. All, we learn is that having been told by Adam of his love for her and having admitted in turn a love for him, Oinah once more retreats to Stonyshire, not staying even long enough to participate in the Harvest Supper. Adam, after waiting for several weeks, is no longer able to endure the strain and sets out for Stonyshire to find her. As he leaves the Loamshire world and enters gray treeless Stonyshire, he is reminded of the painful past, but in an altered light~ for now he possesses what George Eliot calls a sense of enlarged being, the consequences of thtt ruller life brought about by his suffering. He sees Stonyshire now through Dinahs eyes, as it were, and ifhis vision includes the barren land, it also includes the wonderful flooding light and the large embracing sky. Adam waits for Dinah to return from her Sunday preaching not at her home, but on a hill top. Here, in the midst of her world, he discovers that Dnah has undergone a change, the power of her love for him has in a sense overcome her fears; she feels like cl divided person without him, and she is willing †¢to become his wife. He, therefore, takes her back to Loamshire whence she had so fled. It is not, however, to the green and golden world of. June with which the book began; rather to an autumnal mature world. Here, on a rimy morning in departing November, when there is a tinge of sadness in the weather as well as in the joy which accompanies the wedding, Adam and Dinah are married. it is in the fitness of things that they should so come together, for they are bound to either by their common suffering for Hetty and by their painful memories, suffering gives rise to sympathy, and love based on such sympathy alone can be fruitful and lasting. Critic after critic has expressed the view that Adam is too good to be true. It has been said that he is a perfect human being, George Eliots ideal, fully mature and enlightened from the very beginning. But the truth is otherwise. A moment’s reflection shows that he is proud, hard and self-righteous with little sympathy for ordinary sinners, which we all poor mortals are. As a matter of fact, the novel traces the process by which he gradually sheds his faultsof his education, enlightenment and maturity, through a process of suffering and love-and becomes ultimately a complete man, a fully integrated personality, through his love of Dinah and his marriage with her. The process of his education occupies the centre of the novel. The point would become clear, if we briefly consider this process. Hard and Self-righteous There can be no denying the fact that Adam is hard and self-righteous. In the very chapter we are told,† The idle tramps always felt sure they could get a copper from Seth; they scarcely ever spoken to Adam. This is the flaw (not a fatal one) in Adams innocence: In fact, Adam is a stone-hearted person at the very beginning. The very fault in him lies in his over-confidence which makes him to think that he is righteous and it is not wrong in any way. This is told to us by the hymns he sings and the ending with the same hymn is not only appropriate but it also gives him the impression how much significant the hyn1n is? He does not harm anybody, knowingly. Not for a single moment he thinks when he hurts anybody. He is much confident about his doings, Ive seen pretty clear, ever since I could cast up a sum, as you can never do whats wrong without breeding sin and trouble more than you can ever seen. His confidence is shaken when he catches his friend red handed while making love with his beloved Hett}, in the woods. He realises his mistakes, how incomplete his mental seeing has been! He understood it all now-the locket, and everything else that had been doubtful to him a terrible scorching light showed him the hidden letters that changed the meaning of the past. Here starts the process of his education and self-realisation. Realities of Midlands’ Life: George Eliots novels reveal the very aspects of the English Midlands, more specially Warwickshire and Coventry. The†¢ beauty of these Midlands plains caught the attraction of her eyes and these plains found their setting in her novels. Quite a feature of the scenery-and indeed of Warwickshire generally is that the hedges are everywhere closely painted with trees, whose height, as well as the riotous wastefulness of the hedgerose, give evidence of a kindly soil and climate. Methodic Themes: Written by Feuerbach, The Essence of Christianity was translated into English by George Eliot. The influence of Feuerbach can be seen in George Eliot, in her works. In the above mentioned book, Feuerbach talks about the religious significance of water, wine and bread. All of three are sacred for him. The reason for the sacredness of water lies in the fact that it isa force of nature and it keeps us reminding that we have our origins in nature, the same origin of other lower creatures. Thus necessity of water symbolises our oneness with nature and Baptism as well. Wine and bread are man made things which look towards nature for the raw-material, thus symbolises that man is much superior to other lower creatures who are not so efficient to modify natural things. In the Christian ritual of Baptism, only water is used, for innocent and pure-hefirted childr~n. Whereas for the mature man, the Lords supper which includes wine and bread, is served. It suggests that man is much above animals. If the man is hungry and thirsty, he will no more remain a human being and taking of bread and wine restores him to his humanity. This truth is revealed to us through three suppers which is taken by Adam and his humanity kept ever-present in him. References Eliot. George. Adam Bede. New York: Penguin. 1996. Greegor. G. R. Ideological Elements Of Titanic Film Studies Essay

Ideological Elements Of Titanic Film Studies Essay This research explores about the mise-en-scene of the movie Titanic and its impact to the film industry. This chapter discusses the mise-en-scene that is applied in this movie, and also we will discuss about how the impact to the film industry after released the movie Titanic. Titanic is an American disaster and romance movie that released at the year 1997. This movie was directed and written by James Cameron. Titanic was a commercial success and enormous critical after screened to audiences worldwide. The amount gross avenue of the Titanic is $1,843,201,268. This movie maintains the record of the top of box office in the world until the release of James Camerons movie Avatar. Mise-en-scene is a French word that means what to put into the scene. This is the design aspects of film production, means visual theme or telling a story. There have five elements under the mise-en-scene which is setting, space, lighting acting style and also costume. This several elements of mise-en-scene will be use in further stage of this research. 1.1 Research Background The movie Titanic is a fictional romance story that is based on a real historical event, telling story between two young lovers Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) from different social classes who meet at the ships maiden voyage. Their love story end up with the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The budget for this film reached about $200 million; it is making the record that the most expensive film ever made at the time 1997. This film was widely ridiculed for the expense and protracted production scheduled before its release. Titanic was released on December 19, 1997 with 194 minutes running time. This movie was grossed less in the first weekend which is $28.6 million, then the second week is $35.4 million; it is an increase of 23.8%. This is beaten a record for a widely released film at the time. This film has held the number one spot on the box-office charts for the following months, grossing the total of over $600 million in the U.S. and Canada, and also more than $1.8 billion worldwide. This film has become the highest-grossing film in the world, until James Camerons 2009 film Avatar. Despite criticism during production of the film, the Titanic was received a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations at the 1998 Academy Awards. It won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Special Effects, Music, Editing, Sound and Score, and the Best Director award. The movie Titanic is based on the real historical event, so audience would have higher expectations toward the movie. Audiences have the foreknowledge that based on the real historical event, not much audience would wonder that the ship will sink or not in the movie. So, the mise-en-scene is an important aspect in order to make the movie interesting. Other than the mise-en-scene, the class system has obviously shown through this movie. Although the passengers have taking the same ship, but there were have different treats towards different class passengers. 1.2 Summary of the Titanic Titanic tells the romantic and sad story. The story started by explores the wreck of the RMS Titanic under the sea by the treasure hunter Brock Lovett and his team members in the year 1996; they are searching for a necklace called the Heart of the Ocean. They have found a nude womans sketch instead of diamond, the date have wrote at the sketch 14 April 1912, which was the night that the Titanic sinking. The old woman Rose Dawson Calvert contacts with Lovett, tells him that actually she is the woman that inside the sketch. Rose has recalls back her memories when asked the questions about the necklace. In 1912, the upper class lady Rose and her mother board the ship in Southampton, England with her fiancà © Caledon Cal Hockley, the son of a Pittsburgh steel tycoon. Cal and Roses mother stressed that this engagement is important because it will solve the financial problems of Roses family. Rose is not happy for the engagement to Cal, and the pressure of her mother that is putting on her. She considers end up her life by jumping into the sea. Before she leaps, Jack Dawson, an artist and drifter persuades Rose do not jump. A tentative friendship of Jack and Rose was developed at the time. Rose not considering with instruct of her mom and Cal to meet with Jack. The ship is collision with an iceberg, the Titanic will be sinking soon. Cal persuade Rose to a board of a lifeboat, after she boards, Rose realized that she cant leave Jack, Rose reunites with Jack on the Titanic. All the lifeboats were departed when Jack and Rose have return to the top deck. So, many people are falling to their deaths. They take refuge on the stern of the ship as the ship sinks bow first until the time they are washed overboard. The sea water is cold. Jack helps Rose onto the wood which is the wall panel that can only support the weight of one person. Jack assures Rose that she will not die there. Rose blows the whistle that taken from a dead officer nearby when the return of a rescue boat to the site of the sinking of Titanic, the RMS HYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_CarpathiaCarpathia is taken her to New York, she gives herself name as Rose Dawson. She is hidden herself to avoids Cal when she saw Cal is searching for her. At last, her story complete, she goes to the stern of the Lovetts ship. Then she takes out the Heart of the Ocean then drops it into the sea. Later, she is sleeping on her bad, her daily photos is surround her, a visual chronicle that she has lived the life that she wanted with Jack. The last scene showing the young Rose reunites with Jack at the grand staircase of the Titanic; it is cheered and congratulated by those who perished on the Titanic. 1.3 Research Problems The movie Titanic has successfully to bringing audiences to the cinema and hit the top of the box office over ten years with the worldwide gross that over $1.8 billion, it also remained the record for twelve years until the Camerons next directorial effort Avatar, surpassed it in 2010. Titanic was an enormous commercial and critical success. This film was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards, eventually winning eleven, including the Best Picture and Best Director. Some of the internet users were created the trailer of Titanic II and upload in the Youtube.com. It makes people feel that the Titanic II will be release soon. But actually the trailer is the combination of different movie scene that is acted by Leonardo DiCaprio. From here, we can notice that the passion of audiences toward this movie. In an interview on March 2010 with USA Today, the director James Cameron stated, I am guessing six months to a year to do it right. We are targeting spring of 2012 for the release, the 3D version of the Titanic, which is the 100th years anniversary of the sailing of the Titanic. Nowadays, most of the film director is producing the movie with their own style. Mise-en-scene is an important aspect in order to bring out and enhance the quality of the film. Obviously, Titanic has the power to maintain the top of the box office over ten years, the mise-en-scene on this movie is one of the reasons to make this good result. As mentioned above, the Titanic will coming back to the cinema with the 3-D version, the storyline is the same. The same movie will be release in the cinema after 15 years. It is the main reason that inspired me to do research about the mise-en-scene and impacts of this movie. 1.4 Research Objectives To investigate the five mise-en-scene elements those are seen in the movie Titanic. The main goal of this research is to discuss the five mise-en-scene elements that are seen in this movie. To study the ideological elements portrayed in the movie Titanic. Second, this research is going to discuss the ideological elements that are portrayed in this movie. To discover which aspect of mise-en-scene which is most preferred by the viewers in the movie Titanic. Third, since this research has discussed the five mise-en-scene elements that are seen in the Titanic. So, this research also going to find out the most preferred out of five mise-en-scene elements in this movie. Research Questions How were the five elements of mise-en-scene applied into the movie Titanic? What are the ideological elements portray in the movie Titanic? What is the most preferred mise-en-scene element by the viewers in the movie Titanic? 1.6 Research Significance The significance of this research towards the mise-en-scene and its impact on film industry and society of the movie Titanic will help create a better understanding on the mise-en-scene that is seen in this movie. So, it can help to get more deeply knowledge of mise-en-scene through the discussion. This can help the further researcher to get better understanding on mise-en-scene. Besides that, this research can helps to create a better understanding on ideological elements in Titanic. We can find out those ideological elements that were portrayed in this movie. So, I hope can get more knowledge about the class system in western last time. Furthermore, this research also helps to expose which is the most preferred mise-en-scene elements when viewers watching the Titanic. Because this also one of the reason that make the Titanic become successful. 1.7 Research Scope This research will be done through focus group and content analysis. The target group is Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) student from age 18 to 25. The question will be designed base on the Titanic, and it will be posing to 5 students from Mass Communication Division under School of Social Science and Humanities (SSSH). This study selected the sample from TARC Mass Communication student in SSSH that have watched the movie Titanic since they are more major in media subject so that they can give more details answer toward the question. For the content analysis, it will conduct the analysis through the blockbuster movie Titanic that released at the year 1997. The five elements of mise-en-scene and the ideological applied will be analyzed through this film. Mise-en-scene is a French word that means what to put into the scene. This is the design aspects of film production, means visual theme or telling a story. There have five elements under the mise-en-scene which is setting, space, lighting, acting style and also costume. So, through the Titanic, researcher can find out these five mise-en-scene aspect in the film, so that the content analysis can be conduct smoothly. According to John Hess (2005), Ideology is a systematic body of ideas, attitudes, values, and perceptions; such like the actual modes of thinking typical of a given class or group of people in a specific time and place. So, ideology in the film refers to what the ideas that the filmmakers want to portray in the particular film. The content of the film Titanic is a suitable medium in order to conduct content analysis towards ideology in the film. 1.8 Summary As a summary, the mise-en-scene is important to every movie production. Mise-en-scene can be applied in every movie, but the suitable mise-en-scene is the key to make the movie either failed or successful. After the movie released, the most important is the audiences feedback and the impact of the film. Film scholar need to be more understanding towards the mise-en-scene in order to do the movie production in the future. Therefore, this research focuses on the mise-en-scene and the ideological elements that have been applied in the film Titanic and how its work and success when the production and after movie released.

Ethics of Freezing and Buying Eggs

Ethics of Freezing and Buying Eggs $15,000 baby is a very interesting case to consider for me, I have a lot of personal feelings on this and I am going to try and set aside some of them in order to have a fresh perspective, I do however, see myself being very bias on this topic to begin with so I apologize ahead of time and also you may learn some stuff about me in this paper. As far as the specific benefit of freezing eggs, I do not think this is a benefit health care organizations should consider offering in any way. First, I think it is going to be too costly to provide for females who actually want the procedure done.   Second, I dont think many women will bite on this offer, especially since there is such a low chance of actually conceiving this way. If you look at age alone, and IVF, the rates get lower as they get older as chances of conception anyhow. Looking only at the IVF treatments that used fresh embryos from non-donor eggs, the number of women under the age of 35 who gave birth using IVF was about 40%, compared with only 31% for women between the ages of 35 and 37. Only 3.9% of 42-year-olds got pregnant as a result of IVF treatment. (Christensen, 2014) I think it is a wasted benefit when there are other focuses in this area that could be used as a benefit. I do think that adding in benefits for working moms to stay home longer would be great, or adoption assistance for those who cant get pregnant at all or even IVF for those who struggle to get pregnant. To make this a little personal I will go into a little detail about myself and struggles with infertility. I was married for five years to an Australian guy prior to my current relationship. We had tried four of the five years attempting to get pregnant. It ultimately ended our relationship. After numerous fertility specialist and thousands of dollars we found out it was the combination of the two of us together. So we looked into the next step of having kids, which for us, was IVF. Not only did our insurance not cover IVF t hey did not cover any of the fertility specialist either. So we decided to go the adoption route which also was out of pocket. We agreed that our genes werent so superior that we had to make a baby in a test tube when there were so many kids out there needing homes. The last class we took as a requirement for adoption my ex-husband decided that not only did he not want to adopt, he was also done with the relationship. Obviously it was not meant to be and I am in the best place ever due to that decision and I have no regrets of any of it, I have an amazing 7-month old baby now and things worked out how they were supposed to. However, that struggle to me is all too real. I will never understand this being a benefit and a possibility and not infertility specialist, IVF, adoption, etc. I do know there are companies that exist that do have some of these benefits. Which is fantastic. However, the ones offering this benefit in my eyes it benefits only one person and that is the company. Th ey are offering to give women the opportunity to focus on their career rather than a family to benefit the company themselves. So they dont have to worry about maternity leave from top performers or women quitting and never coming back. I can understand the administrative perspective of this and I try to look at it with an open mind and without emotional thinking. However, I come back to the point that if they are so willing to help women extend their age of mom hood but not willing to assist in them becoming a mom in other ways then it really is not a benefit for women, especially the majority of women. If the DHHS mandates these benefits I think the impact on businesses would be significant. First, it is going to be very costly. The act of IVF alone is around $10,000 for one try and there are numerous couples who would take full advantage of this opportunity. The average cost of one IVF treatment in the United States is $12,400, and thats without the extra medicines the couple may need, according to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Often, couples will need more than one treatment to conceive. (Christensen, 2014) If they take advantage of the opportunity the next step would be the amount of women able to get pregnant now that were not before, taking maternity leave and possibly even quitting the job field. The benefits to egg freezing however, would be very beneficial to a lot of companies. Especially for the women who are go-getter, company changing, innovative game changers for the companies. They would hate to put a stall in that or have them change or even worse, r esign for mother hood. I can tell you from personal experience that so far in my childs 7 months of life, my way of thinking is completely different. Not even just on an emotional or logical sense but in the way that my brain literally does not function the way it did before. I feel clouded, slow to speak instead of witty as I was before, distracted, exhausted, etc. My brain literally does not work as quick and I feel foggy at times as if I have dumbed down. I had heard the term pregnancy brain on and off again throughout my pregnancy but then found out that it really kicks in after you have had a baby and you are only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night total for even the first 7 months. I learned though that this tends to wear off and go away after a year, and some of it sticks forever. With all of that said, women having babies in a position of power or innovation, could cause unanticipated negative effects for the company they work for. So I can understand wanting to put off moth erhood until your career is well established and thriving. There would also be an impact on the health care industry here. The cost of these procedures are high, but if the companies are paying for them to begin with it will cause a drive in the amount of people seeking theses services, therefore, supply and demand changes and maybe the cost of these services may eventually go down. We would also have more women having babies. doctors at these clinics performed 165,172 procedures, including IVF, with 61,740 babies born as a result of those efforts in 2012. (Christensen, 2014) The impact on federally mandated paid family leave, FMLA would be very expensive. People use FMLA every day. At any given time, 10.7% of the U.S. workforce is on FMLA leave. Thats right, according to FMLA Sources analysis, one in every 10 employees is taking FMLA leave right now. And thats the average in some industries the number is far greater. For example, in health care organizations and call centers, the number of people on FMLA leave at a given time is as much as 30%. (Schappel, 2015) If you put that in numbers, specifically the health care system it would ultimately go bankrupt and be nonexistent. It would change the way FMLA is given out in the healthcare industry as well. I think right now physicians are very lenient on signing FMLA paperwork because it has no detrimental effect on them in anyway. However, once it becomes a monetary thing, the companies could begin to look into suing physicians for giving FMLA when it is not needed. I think it will also cause a huge uproar for companies in the matter of having to payout FMLA for things that could have been prevented, i.e. type two diabetes, lung cancer from cigarettes, pregnancy, etc. This may cause companies and the health care industry to make prophylactic care even more of a priority than it already is. There are lot of ethics involved here for everyone in the party. I read an article written for NY times that points out a lot of valid arguments as to why it could be unethical to provide this benefit to women. First, stimulating womens ovaries and retrieving eggs is a two-week medical process that is not without medical risk. Offering or promoting it to women who may never need it should be done cautiously. Employers may have the best of intentions, but no woman should undergo a medical procedure without thorough, informed consent obtained through discussion with a genuinely objective medical professionalà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ there are other costs, including annual storage fees. these smart, young, fertile workers share a lot of characteristics with ideal egg donors. Ultimately, these unneeded eggs may end up on the market. And if you dont work for Apple or Facebook, want to preserve your fertility and need to find a way to pay for it, you might be offered an egg-sharing option. All of th is may be tempting for women, employers and doctors alike, but it raises serious ethical, informed consent and conflict of interest issues. (Crockin 2014) As she says, there are some serious risk in doing this, plus the outcomes really are not all that promising. So ethically you are putting women at higher risk doing this method with a promise of a baby later in life when realistically the chance is only at 30% that they become pregnant. So you are setting in a false hope into women who eventually want to parent, they count on you to provide these services so they can wait to be moms and then the time comes they choose to become a parent and their egg is no good or doesnt take any of the times and then they have no child after all. This can all be pinpointed back to the employer for enticing them to begin with. As a CEO I would seriously consider the want for this benefit, even if I disagree with it. Some of the things I would be looking at and considering are the percentage of women requesting it. If it is such a small amount of request that the impact wont hurt or help either way, I would deny the coverage and request a meeting explaining why I denied it as a coverage but offer up a savings plan in place that the company would be willing to match up to a certain percentage of the savings this way all employees would benefit from something rather than one expensive benefit given out to select few. If numerous women were interested in this process, I would figure out the cost to our company if 100% took advantage and make my decision from there. I would have to decide if it is detrimental to have in order to keep the women requesting this as well as if it would attract new employees who are also looking for this sort of benefit.   Overall, the benefit to me appears to be an overkill. There are numerous benefits out there that can be given that would help more people and be less expensive. If it is just to be innovative and make it on the news for the uniqueness that is for each company to decide. I just do not see much of a benefit here overall for employees and even the employers. What is the purpose for new employee orientation?   What are the essential components of an effective orientation program? What was the training and orientation you received in your most recent job?   What changes would you propose to your supervisors and how will you communicate these? If you were to design an orientation from scratch for your employer, what would you include? Why? New employee orientation is designed to help new employees develop a basic understanding and skill set of the company they were hired within. This covers everything from basic policies to individualized task and job description duties. 25 percent of companies admitted that their onboarding program does not include any form of training, which leads to a loss of 60 percent of a companys entire workforce. Without a substantial and effective training program in a new employee onboarding effort, disappointments will result relative to performance and other profit hindering factors. (Kime, 2015) The essential components of an effective orientation program according to Albert Brannen are; Compliance with government rules, information about the employers mission, core values and culture, information about the employers benefits, information about critical employer policies, introduction to other employees and to the employers facilities, thorough explanation about the new employees job dutie s, documentation of the entire orientation process. (Brannen, 2014). I am going to actually reference my job as a surgical technologist since my last job I was at for 3 years and although it had a great orientation program, it was not near as in depth as orientation for becoming a surgical technologist in Labor and Delivery. My initial orientation required that I go to an actual hospital wide orientation class for an entire week. The first day was all formalities, ID badges, tax forms, blank checks for direct deposit, benefit sign up, etc. The next 4 days were spent going over, in depth, hospital policies, blood borne pathogens, cpr certifications, harassment training, really boring osha required videos, emergency preparedness, HIPPA, etc. It was long and really awful but also the norm for any new clinical employee at the hospital. After my week of hospital orientation, I began what would be eight weeks of job specific orientation. I had a mentor that I was paired with for eight wee ks who taught me everything I would ever need to know as a surgical technologist in Labor and Delivery. He (the only male in our entire department) had been there for over 15 years. He was able to teach me things I would have never learned in school, the actual job itself and the best part, doctors preferences. The hardest part about being the right hand to a surgeon is that every single one of them were completely different. They would call the names of instruments whatever they wanted, they all used completely different suture, they wanted retractors held a different way, umbilical cords cut at different lengths, staples done different, etc. Those were all within my scope of practice as well as numerous other things, and every one of them wanted it done different. By then end of my eight weeks on orientation not only did I know how to do a C-section from start to finish in my sleep but I could also individualize each case depending on the doctors wants and needs and we had over 30 doctors including the current family practice residents (who never really knew what they wanted). The count of the instruments, the set-up of everything, each layer of tissue being cut into, what they were called and how to separate them (there are 5 layers before you get to the amniotic sac à ¯Ã‚ Ã…  ), when to pass the instruments and when to pass blood control without a doctor ever asking me for anything, I could retract without having to be repositioned, when baby was born I had cord clamps and scissors ready for me to cut the cord and then draw cord blood an automatic requirement and then immediately as baby is handed off to nurse I began to pass suture and begin blood control again all while calculating blood loss and maintain a sterile field. I could do all of this by eight weeks (obviously plus two years of school before hand) thanks to my orientation. By six months I worked nights and only did emergency C-sections. I had done everything from a prolapsed cord, which is in sane if you ever have time to research it, to hemorrhaging patients where we literally had to run to the O.R. and do whats called a splash and dash (iodine pour and cut) and I did it with confidence and without error. I could still perform a C-section sans doctor today if I ever had to. Its amazing what the surgical technologist are allowed to do within their scope of practice. My favorite was finally getting to do sutures and staples of the final close. It was thrilling to me and I would have never thrived as well without my eight weeks of orientation with someone by my side at all times. New employees who attended a well-structured onboarding orientation program, were 69 percent more likely to remain at a company up to three years. Losing an employee due to their experiences of being confused, feeling alienated, or lacking confidence is a sign of poor onboard programming (Kime, 2014) Some of the changes I would include in that orientation are important. First, I think I should hav e had orientation for at least on night shift, because it was an entire different ball game. It would have been nice to adjust to the differences before being released on my own. Second, I would have made sure to explain a solo C-section. Basically the surgeon has to have two surgical technologists to do the procedure. There is the right hand tech which is who I always was and then a tech across from myself and the doctor who is just there to help retract and maintain count and sterile fields. However, a lot of times (the reason I quit ultimately) I was alone on Friday nights. The only Surgical Technologist in our department. Which means for emergency C-sections (thank God we never had more than one at a time!) I had to train a nurse in a crash course of how to maintain a sterile field and retract. It is a simple concept but in an emergency you have a nurse who knows how to gown and glove but has never ever assisted on a C-section. I think it would have been really nice to go over a ll of this in orientation because everyone had to solo a C-section from time to time and knowing what key points to use to train I feel are crucial. I still feel like this is absolutely not okay from an administrative point of view, the risk is way to high throwing in a nurse who did not study sterile technique into a surgery they have never done, during an emergency. But, that is another topic that I will try not to disclose at this point. If I were to design an orientation program from scratch I would include all of what was already included in mine but also include night training, how to train and RN in a crash course, etc. I would also implement a surgeon training book, basically a book of all of the surgeons quirks, preferences, pet peeves, etc. into a pocket book to help reference to and learn in order to make a smoother surgery and a happy surgeon. Because, lets face it, if your surgeon hates you, your life is hell. God, I dont miss those days. I do miss the job itself though . Employers are finding it more difficult to support health insurance coverage as a benefit as it has become costlier than the tax savings for offering it.   Do you think employer-based health insurance on its way out under the affordable Care Act?   What are practical concerns if employers do not maintain this benefit to a healthcare organization?   What trends are there in the workplace in this region? What are employers doing to manage its health costs? Employer-Based health insurance is becoming more and more expensive. It is a lot more costly then it is to just pay the taxes Obama care actually requires. The employer mandate fee (officially called an Employer Shared Responsibility Payment) is a per-month, per-employee fee for employers who have more than 50 full-time equivalent employees and dont offer health coverage to the required amount of full-time employees (as well as their dependents up to age 26). The annual fee is $2,000 per employee if insurance isnt offered at all (the first 30 full-time employees are exempt). This helps lower the fee for smaller firms who are still required to pay the fee. Unlike employer contributions to employee premiums, the Employer Shared Responsibility Payment is not tax deductible. (Obamacarefacts, 2016) The company has to provide affordable insurance. Affordable means that a plan costs no more than 9.5% of employees household income for employee-only coverage. As a safe harbor, employers can s imply make sure the plan costs no more than 9.5% of employee-only income. (Obamacarefacts 2016) So since it is cheaper for a lot of companies to pay the fee instead of providing affordable insurance at no more than 9.5% of their employees household income, I can see how it could eventually work its way out of the system. However, companies that choose to not provide insurance will be the bottom on the list of places to apply looking ahead at total compensation plans it would really cut out of the total compensation provided. So I think if the company is smart they will not eliminate health insurance over all. The trends in our regions are kind of hard to determine because, Approximately 96 percent of employers are small businesses and have fewer than 50 FTE workers and are exempt from the employer responsibility provisions. (Obamacarefacts, 2016) Therefor they are not mandated to provide insurance anyhow and already have a system set in place for their policies in their workplaces. Since this has gone into effect a lot of companies have moved full time employees into part time positions to avoid having to provide insurance. It has caused a lot of people to lose finances, jobs, homes, etc all based upon the fact that employers had to cut hours and add in more part time workers in order to completely avoid the mandate altogether. Some of the things employers are doing to manage health cost are focusing on prophylactic care, or preventative health. They are providing routine screenings, competitions for weight loss programs, healthy lifestyle tips, healthy vending machines, etc. They are doing this in order to decrease health insurance use and ultimately cut down the cost of insurance premiums overall. Describe the concept of total compensation and components that make it up.   Why is it important?   How is it determined?   What impact does it have on recruitment and retention? Total compensation is not just the amount of money being paid but the total amount with benefits included being a total sum of all your compensation you are receiving to do the job. There are ten elements that comprise a typical compensation package. They are: Base Salary Annual/Quarterly Bonus Other bonus (Peer, boss, outstanding non-normal accomplishments) Stock options Stock units (Hurray!) 401k contribution (Pre-tax and Roth) Health Wellness (Medical, dental, vision, employee assistance program) Life Accident Insurance (Basic life, accidental death and dismemberment, long term disability, survivor income benefit) Other Insurance (Travel, legal) Perks (Food, internet services, gym memberships, cell phone and service, company bus/train/plane, massages, company discounts, electric car chargers, university/ongoing education funding, etc.) (Kaushik, 2014) Total compensation is important because it determines the value of the job as a whole when deciding upon a position or career place. Hourly wages and salary do not matter in total when deciding a job anymore, the benefits package makes a big difference on making final decisions these days. Total compensation, which includes wages and benefits, is most often thought of as the key element affecting an individuals decision to accept the position with an organization. (Fried, 2015) To determine total compensation you would add up your base pay with your benefits provided. Or according to Fried, Total compensation is the value of the employees base salary plus the value of the benefits package. An employer may help articulate this fact in several ways, including the following: Add a section on pay advices that notes the value of the employer-paid portion of health insurance. Provide benefits calculation tools on the company website or intranet. Produce customized benefits statements during the annual open enrollment process. Use social media to communicate benefits through a patient portal and/or interactive applications. Communication of the worth of these benefits is essential if an employer intends them to play a part in recruitment and retention. (Fried, 2015) Recruitment and retention are going to depend on this factor in order to draw in the right employees like the book says, you have to have something ready for them to visibly see the actual dollar amount of the benefits being offered in order to show the true value of what is being offered to them. This is crucial in staying ahead of the game in the job market. Resources Fried, B. J., Fottler, M. D. (2015). Human Resources in Healthcare Managing for Success (4th ed.).
